The wood sculpture of Jason Imam is based upon an ancient wood cutting tradition of the forest peoples of India, and follows an illustrative tradition in which the medium is wood directly cut with a saw or chisel. The subjects he uses are common to the Khovar and Sohrai tribes which are also linked with the same kinds of art in Madhya Pradesh. The artist being Oraon shows a kinship between Oraon art and culture with that of the Maria in Bastar and even the Khond in Orissa, which is illustrated in a two-dimensional aspect in the combs, relief carvings, and ritual animal motifs.
