Metalwork in Hazaribagh has been traditionally carried on by the Malhars, a small tribe working in the cere perdure or "lost wax" process using forest produce shellac, their clay modelling of forms on which the figurines are cast, being of an ancient prehistoric tradition.

Recently Oraon artist Jason Imam has taken up and carries on the experiment using art noveau Khovar and Sohrai forms modeled and cast on the "lost lac" process.
