Eldest daughter of Bulu and Philomina Imam, she inherited from her mother the sacred traditions of her tribe in painting, song, dance, story telling, and culture. At an early age she demonstrated an unusual talent in the visual art of painting and a frank outspokenness in the defence of the cultural traditions and indigenous rights of her tribe, both of which were highly threatened at the time. She has twice represented the Tribal Women Artists’ Cooperative at the forum of the United Nation’s Working Group on Indigenous Populations, Geneva.

Experience:

  • In 2001 delivered a lecture on the Culture of Jharkhand as a Delegate on behalf of Tribal Women Artists Cooperative at the 19th Session of the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Population conference at Geneva, 22-26 July, 2001
  • In 2001 gave a working demonstration in the technique of Khovar and Sohrai style of painting at the Bellevue Gallery in Berlin (August 2001)
  • In 2002 attended the 20th Session of the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Population meeting at Geneva, 22-26 July, 2002 and delivered a lecture on the art and culture of Jharkhand in the context of social development in the State and displayed her paintings at the UN Headquarters, Geneva. .
